Program Components

Sector-Specific Work Experience and Training

Get hands-on experience with the projects that matter most to you.

Complete at least three courses and 50 hours of volunteer work in the work sector of your choice. There are many options for everyone, including:

  • Education: Teach lessons that last a lifetime and strengthen relationships among families, schools and communities by working as a math, science, English, resource or reading/literacy teacher.
  • Health: Address urgent global health crises, such as malnutrition, maternal and child health, hygiene, and malaria and HIV/AIDS, by working alongside clinics and healthcare providers on culturally competent, community-first strategies.
  • Environment: Create a more sustainable world by promoting efforts to protect local natural resources and enhance people’s knowledge of environmental issues.

You will meet with an adviser to discuss the best options for you.

Intercultural Competence

Break down cultural barriers, starting in the classroom.

Take three courses that will help you learn about other histories and cultures while reflecting on your own experiences. These courses provide transformative opportunities to develop new skills, knowledge and perspectives. You’ll be empowered to collaborate with people in any community, anywhere in the world, bridging your differences and creating lasting connections.

You can also fulfill this component by engaging in an intercultural experience—like studying, volunteering or teaching abroad—or taking courses in another language.

Professional and Leadership Development

Build a career-ready foundation for your next step.

Serving with the Peace Corps and other global service organizations requires a high level of professionalism. In this program, you’ll take the steps to make yourself a competitive candidate for these—or any other—positions.

  • Have your résumé critiqued.
  • Attend an interview skills or mock interviewing training.
  • Embark on at least one significant leadership experience and be able to discuss it thoughtfully.
  • Connect with Peace Corps recruiters to discover more benefits of service.
