Sustainability initiatives are in full bloom at Adelphi.

In light of Earth Day—Wednesday, April 22, 2015—we look at the multiple ways Adelphi is showing its commitment to environmental responsibility. With its myriad of green energy initiatives— from installing geothermal and solar heating and cooling systems to supporting innovative research—Adelphi continues its legacy of creating a sustainable campus and world.

Kicking the Kids Out(side)

Children from Adelphi’s Early Learning Center get in touch with nature with some gardening.

Professor of Biology George K. Russell, Ph.D., recently published what celebrated primatologist Jane Goodall, Ph.D., praised as “a very important book” discussing the need to immerse children in nature to improve their overall well-being and appreciation for the environment. .

Going Solar

Justyna Widera, Ph.D., an associate professor of chemistry, has long been committed to green energy and the research and development of more efficient solar cells. .

Did you know?

* Adelphi uses 100 percent green power.

* Solar panels on the roof of ’s Swirbul Library have generated more than 235,000 kilowatt hours of energy and offset more than 293,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.

*’s grounds-keeping practices are entirely organic and pesticide-free.

* A new heat and power plant that is being installed on ’s Garden City campus.

* As part of , the University offers a rideshare program—Panther Share—and has installed electric vehicle charging stations in its underground garage.
