{"id":680,"date":"2020-12-18T12:31:10","date_gmt":"2020-12-18T17:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/?page_id=680"},"modified":"2026-06-17T13:16:40","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T17:16:40","slug":"course-requirements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/current-students\/course-requirements\/","title":{"rendered":"Full Course of Study Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Summer and winter enrollment is generally optional unless your program requires continuous enrollment.<\/p>\n<h2>Minimum Enrollment Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>F-1 students must maintain the following minimum enrollment each required academic term:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Undergraduate Students:<\/strong> 12 credits each Fall and Spring semester<\/li>\n<li><strong>Master\u2019s Students:<\/strong> 9 credits each Fall and Spring semester<\/li>\n<li><strong>Doctoral Students:<\/strong> 9 credits each Fall and Spring semester, or enrollment in dissertation research with active faculty supervision<\/li>\n<li><strong>UHub Students:<\/strong> 6 credits each Fall, Spring, and Summer semester<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-Degree Pathway Students:<\/strong> A combination of credit and\/or clock hours as defined by the approved program of study<\/li>\n<li><strong>English Language Study Students:<\/strong> 18 clock hours per week for primarily classroom-based instruction<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Online Course Rules<\/h2>\n<p>Federal regulations allow F-1 students to count only one online course (up to 3 credits) toward the minimum full-time enrollment requirement during each required academic term.<\/p>\n<p>Additional online courses may be taken if the student is otherwise meeting the full-time enrollment requirement through eligible in-person coursework.<\/p>\n<h2>Reduced Course Load<\/h2>\n<p>In limited circumstances, F-1 students may be authorized by International Services to enroll below full-time while maintaining status. This is known as a reduced course load (RCL).<\/p>\n<p>Do not drop below full-time enrollment without prior approval from International Services.<\/p>\n<h3>Eligibility and How to Apply for a Reduced Course Load<\/h3>\n<p>F-1 students who are unable to maintain full-time enrollment due to a temporary illness or medical condition may be eligible for a Reduced Course Load (RCL). In some cases, authorization may be granted for no enrollment during the approved period.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify, students must submit documentation from a licensed U.S. healthcare provider and receive approval from their Designated School Official (DSO) before stopping attendance, withdrawing or dropping courses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summer and winter enrollment is generally optional unless your program requires continuous enrollment.
